Oscar Wilde surely was a quotable sonofabitch but sometimes a man just needs to sulk in solitude. Well, find another movie because AN IDEAL HUSBAND is a charming romcom who will flirt with you until you give in to its advances. This makes the entire film sound aggressive and somewhat criminal but if Rupert Everett, Minnie Driver, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett and THE MAN of 1999 Jeremy Northam are wrong then who the hell wants to be right? In THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER John Travolta has an atrocious Southern accent for a stretch of undercover work but thankfully for the enjoyment of at least one host he manages to sweat for nearly the entire runtime of this problematic thriller. Madeline Stowe attempts to be the only adult in the room as we kink-shame the Army before we really shame them for truly foul deeds. Call at least one host crazy (but you'd be right to apply that to both) but this movie remains kind of fun. Kind of. And that's goddamn good enough. Click here:

Twenty years later and thankfully AUSTIN POWERS did not have the staying power of James Bond. But in the summer of 1999 this Mike Myers sequel THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME earned more in its opening weekend than the original did in its entire theatrical run.
